In a world of heightened geopolitical instability, governments often look to economic, trade, and diplomatic sanctions as well as export controls as a means to exert pressure without resorting to armed conflict. By focusing on regulating or terminating certain interactions and transactions, a sanctions
strategy can – with varying degrees of efficacy – safeguard economic and geopolitical stability by addressing concerns such as human rights abuses, terrorism, and nuclear proliferation.
